Children's Eating Habits and Tips

It is probably best not to mention anything when you don't agree with the food your children give your grand children; it will prevent an argument and save everyone a lot of grieve. The best thing to do is to serve them some healthy veggies and fruits when they are staying over for a meal at your place.

I think it is common knowledge that the best place to be is in the kitchen. When your grand children are at an age where they can help prepare meals, invite them in and let them help. Give them a small task like stirring something or help with the preparations. Since they helped fixing the meal, they are more likely to eat it and it also gives you an opportunity during the process, to slip in some advice on healthy cooking. You can make it even more fun by dressing them up as little cooks.

Instead of giving them cookies and other sweet treats, consider putting out a bowl of fruits with a dip. Cleaned and washed strawberries, raspberries and blackberries for instance, served along with a bowl of sugar free cool whip, are appealing and a good and healthy alternative. Carrots with a low fat dip are another suggestion.

Children's weight is linked to inactivity; watching TV has taken the place of in and outdoor activities. It would be wise to plan some trips and other outdoor activities when your grand children are coming over. Even a trip to the grocery store will help with being active and can turn out to be a pleasurable outing and increase the bonding as well. Bring out the old fashioned board games and think of other indoor activities in case the weather is not holding up. Try not to let anything hold you back to join the fun!

It usually comes down to setting an example; kids love to mimic the adults even when it comes down to eating what they are having. That is something to keep in mind when taking them out to eat. Of course you don't have to cut out the sweets completely. There is nothing wrong with giving them some candy or a cookie every now and then, as long as it is in moderation, but that goes for everything, doesn't it?! :-)
