Kids and Crafts

Now that our grandchildren are growing older, the options for crafts and arts are opening up. I already know both boys love expressing their creativity by covering the patio, and anything else for that matter, with chalk.

They would go through tons of chalk sticks in no time, if we would let them and although a box of chalk is not that expensive, it is much more fun making our own. How? It's not that difficult at all. All we need are the following materials:

- 2 cups dry plaster.
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup cold water.
- Water-based paint.
- Plastic mixing container and stir stick.
- Wax paper or plastic sheet.
- Empty toilet paper tube; this is used as a mold for making giant chalk sticks!

Mix water, paint and plaster together and stir until there are no lumps and the plaster has the consistency of cake batter. Stand the toilet paper tube on the wax paper or plastic sheet and pour the plaster in to the top of the tube. Now it is a matter of waiting until the mixture is completely dry.

This is a cute idea to do with children, but I would ensure to have some other activity lined up while the plaster is drying. From experience I know that kids are usually rather impatient and if you can distract them in the mean time, it will be and remain an enjoyable experience.
