May: National Mobility Awareness Month

This post brought to you by NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I know there are many people with a disability, or who are confronted with limited mobility issues, but I had no clue that this pertained to over 18 million people in the U.S. and Canada alone.

If you think that most of them are veterans, then you are wrong; only a third is. The rest are persons like you and me and that makes people with disabilities the 2nd largest minority in the United States.

I didn't know all this, but I got the facts from NMEDA, The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. NMEDA, in association with BraunAbility, Bruno Independent Living Aids, VMI/Vantage Mobility International, Toyota, Chrysler, and SanTan Honda Superstore in Chandler, AZ, sponsor National Mobility Awareness Month which is the coming month of May.

People who are faced with limited mobility don't have to be confined to their homes any longer. Mobility equipment manufacturers, dealers, certified driver rehabilitation specialists and other professionals in their communities are there to lend a helping hand improving the lives of those affected and assisting in regaining their freedom and independence.

If you know, or are one, of the persons with disabilities, caregivers, or veterans who deals with or has overcome the challenges limited mobility presents, then you ought to submit their/your story through online communities, NMEDA’s Facebook page, blog, and website, and prod family and friends to vote for it.

Your story will also make the local and national media over the next several months and the three stories with the most votes will be awarded with a custom Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle which will be given away on a popular TV show like Good Morning America, The Today Show, or Ellen.

National Spokesperson Mike Savicki is a great example of how to make the most out of living with immobility. The 44-year old, C6, 7 quadriplegic, is a veteran, athlete, advocate, and entrepreneur, and recently purchased a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle from a NMEDA dealer.

Don't let immobility put you on the sidelines of life; with a little help you can easily reverse that situation!
